Lucas is a first-year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and a member of the Webber Energy Group. His research will focus on energy systems in the context of the built environment, with an emphasis on improving efficiency and sustainability. He is interested in using engineering analysis to inform the design and implementation of clean energy systems. His broader motivation for pursuing this work stems from a desire to help improve energy access and quality of life in developing countries.
Originally from Dublin, Ohio, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University in 2025. As an undergraduate, he conducted research in the Fluids and Thermal Transport Laboratory, studying heat transfer through angled hydrophobic surfaces. He also served a two-year church mission in Côte d’Ivoire from 2018 to 2020, which deepened his interest in addressing global energy challenges.
In addition to his academic pursuits, he was a six-time All-American in cross country and track and field at BYU and a member of the 2024 NCAA Cross Country National Championship team. Outside of research, he enjoys spending time with his wife, camping, pick-up sports, and gardening.
